Yesterday when my 53 plate L200 4Life was parked with the ignition keys removed the windscreen washer motor started running for no reason. The only way I could switch it off was by thumping it with my hand it did the same trick an hour later and I stopped it again by thumping it. Later in the afternoon it did the same again and I stopped it by disconnecting it.
Has anyone come across this problem before?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Actually, on further inspection today I've found that the washer motor which is starting up at random feeds the headlamp washers, not the windscreen washers. However the problem is still there. I disconnected the feed wires to the washer motor this afternoon and discovered that one is permanently live. The headlamp washers should only work when the ignition is on and so are the lights. I'm wondering if there is a relay in the system which has got stuck in the 'on' position. .
Unfortunately I'm working away from home just now and don't have access to my workshop manual and wiring diagram.

my headlamp washers done this so I just cut the wires & taped them up. never used them anyway

You want to find the cause of this. If you have a short which is triggering a relay without the ignition you have a pretty serious risk of something going
You probably want to check the relay and switches. Did anything else come on?

there was a recall to do with the dim dip on classics ........ not sure if it was the stalk or the relay. It may be related as the little button thingy is on the end of the stalk. I think Dan is right in that you need to sort this one out asap as a random live aint gonna do you any favours. @maca4x4 just had to replace his stalk after it was playing up, He may have some advice for you perhaps ?

I am pretty sure it was the relay and not the stalk that was recall issue, but it could be the stalk at fault, as mine went faulty and caused alot of the loom to join together in a mess!! might be worth putting your hands around your stalk to see if its hot

my stalk wires melted together causing a nice smoke like display ,when i cut the plastic coating off them you could see they had fused together,,quite lucky to get away with just the stalk and not some of the wiring loom

Thanks very much guys. Lots of good advice there. I will check the stock and also see if I can find the relevant relay. Can't do much today because of the rain and howling wind here on the Isle of Arran. Hopefully can check it out tomorrow. Does anyone know where the relay is in the truck?

I all first post, I amcurrently rebuilding my 2002 l200 and pressure washed the right hand side of the engine bay around the washer bottle, now my washer also runs on its own so probably water in the pump connector.

Get onto this later, I have just returned home from a little jolly away...
