horrendous vibration At 45mp

#1 by Danmak , Mon Dec 01, 2014 5:31 pm

Hi guys,

On my way to work this morning doing about 45mph and I went over a cat eye on a little bend and I got a violent vibration and it stopped as I slowed down to about 20mph, so I pulled over had a look and nothing seemed wrong, set back off and it did it again 10 mins down the road but this time because the road was bumpy,
The violent vibration feels like the tyres are catching on the body, but there is nothing catching and it stops when I get to 20mph
It feels like it is coming through the steering wheel

Any help would be appreciated thanks

No there all fine, it's a lot worse than wheel balancing, it's hard to describe what it's doing

No the tyre looks fine,

It's got me baffled because it doesn't do it all the time just a slight knock to set it off then once I slow down it stops and I can speed back up untill it gets another knock

Pull on the stearing rods to see if the stearing idler and pitman arm are ok , I have a worn stearing idler and that causes stearing wheel to shake on bends

Play in the stearing joints can cause vibration and shudder , it would be worth jacking it up under the lower wishbone one side at a time so the wheel is just off the ground and move it side to side to see if there is play in the joints and also top to bottom , if you put a bar under the jacked up wheel and lift up and down that will also show ball joint wear . Hope this helps

There's definatly play in the pitman arm so I will change that over got a new one kicking around somewere, I'll change the track rod end at same time and grease her nipples and see if it still does it thanks for your help

After a track rod end, greased my nips, and tightened and re-greased wheels bearings she's back good as gold
