Intermittent Starting problem

#1 by Theoldman , Thu Jan 01, 2015 12:04 pm

L200 TD2.5 Year 2000 Forlife.

Would anyone be able to tell me if there is a fuel pump relay fitted to the above vehicle and if there is where exactly it is located please?
The problem I have is what "appears" to be an intermittent fuel/starting problem -
Starts and runs fine from cold or warm 90% of the time but on odd occasions once stopped, will turn over fine but will not fire suggesting no fuel from pump.
If left for a period ie half an hour/one hour or overnight will start fine again.
Any ideas welcomed!

Not tried that ..... Just seemed to be more like an electrical fault?

give it a try mate could be air in the fuel line or fuel draining back to tank if you have a soft one then you have a problem check the simple things before going electrical

Check there is full voltage goin to the electric diesel stop on the pump. I've also heard before of the diesel stop becoming sticky. I think you can disassemble it and give it a clean.

Fly By Wire ...if you have it , it mean you don't have an actual throttle cable, all done by sensors and electrickery

Doh! When your my age new fangled contraptions like fly by wire weren't even dreamt of!
So backing up a little .... Is there a fuel relay or solenoid that "may" be the possible cause?

Where exactly is the "electric diesel stop" situated?

It's on the back of the fuel pump, round nut like thing (24mm) with a single wire terminal on top, normally held with an 8mm nut.

Will look into it a bit more tomorrow when I have more light.
Thanks for the info ref the "diesel stop" & the diagram, I might be able to get my head around it.
Started/stopped it several times today when hot with no problems hence not tried the primer.
Do I assume there "is" a relay controlling the diesel stop? If there is one fitted where would I find it?

Most motor factors will get you one, try Euro car parts but phone or go in as there web prices are stupid, alternatively try eBay or milners
