Has anyone any experience with trackers and how they work in the sense of the item itself and software needed to view them.
Been viewing these but I looked online and fleet management sites are mentioning annual system rentals etc.

I'm looking a really cheap system with one off software payment etc.
One from China is sim powered but loss of signal worries me.
Any thoughts?

I have one like this:-
Werbung: ebay tracker

It has gps so when it sends you the location it's very accurate. It comes with a year free subscription so you can log on to a web page and view where the truck is. Or you can call the tracker and it will text you it's location. I just click on the link it sends me and it opens up Google maps.

I'm pretty happy with it although it does lose power as I only do a 5 min drive to work which isn't enough to keep the battery charged. I've designed a little 1 hour auto off circuit for about £5 which keeps it charging for an hour after I switch the ignition off.

I heard they can reduce your insurance payments?

I suspect they would need to be professionally installed and monitored before an insurer would give you a discount. But, of course, I'm not an insurer so probably best to ask one!

A number of guys on the mig-welding forum have mentioned fitting them to their own vans and they seem very impressed. I'll see if I can dig up the link to the thread.

I do wonder exactly how it works, though; is it sending a text every so often with its own location, or sending over the data network? If so then as cheffy says they may work out expensive to run.

From what I think I've figured out the quartix one uses a national system with annual costs but not sure.

The Chinese one apparently sends texts when you call it as to where it is but that'd be no use if it loses signal

I know that you'd still have the possible reception loss problem but could and old iPhone which most of us seem to have kicking about be set up with a free pay as you go sim to use to find where your phone is using iPhone location system from your normal use phone?

Yeah - I considered that, too. Depends on how hidden you want it - little chance of sticking it under the bonnet or anywhere else where it's exposed to weather.
And the problem with PAYG SIMs is that you need to make a chargeable call from them every so often or they get cancelled by the provider. I'd been thinking about a GSM alarm system for the garage with a PAYG SIM but would need to ensure that I made a chargeable call with it every few weeks...

Indeed - or behind the glove box? Actually - is the glove box removable in the classic? In the newshape, you open it, pinch the sides at the top, and it swings fully down - that would be a great place to hide an iphone and it would have easy access to power from behind the fag lighter.

You just need to figure out some kind of schedule to make a call from it every few months, so it would need to be accessible.

Cool - let us know how you get on.

This is the kind of thing I was thinking about for the garage - total overkill in terms of the sensors but the bits that I liked the look of were;

2 x wireless remote controls to arm/disarm it
1 x door contact to hook to the garage door
1 x door contact to hook to the shed door (where the bikes are)
The GSM auto-dialer that would phone you and say "The garage/shed door has been opened"

£59 delivered; Werbung: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LCD-WIRELESS-G...=item35df58b7f5 (that's the first one I clicked, there are lots more on ebay)

I'd never rely on something so shonky for the house, but I think it would work well on the outbuildings.

Actually - if I get one, there will be no deterrent! I won't put an alarm sign up, or even wire up the sounder, cos one will be an invitation to the scallies that there's something worth nicking inside, and the other will just p*ss everyone off with false alarms.

If I get a call from the system saying "The garage door has been opened" then I'll; a) look out the window if I'm in the house, b) ring the wife if I'm out and she's in or c) call the neighbours if we're both out.
It's mostly as a headsup that something iffy may be occurring...

The one I have can either be called and it'll send a text which costs about 10p or I can use the free app which uses data at a cost of 0.001p. I've out £5 credit on it and hardly used anything. The chargeable call rule is about 6 months on some networks so as long as I call the tracker twice a year I'm ok! Never really had a signal loss issue yet.
