plasti dip

Hi All, anyone used Plasti Dip? I'm feeling the need to change the colour of a few things, but temporarily so I can go back to standard if needed.

Yes. Did the whole truck in it. It has it's pros and cons like anything. As a non permanent paint job it works very well. Easily removed and tougher than you think. You need 6 coats minimum for the most durabaility. 8 even better. Use only brand PlastiDip. The others use regular paint thinner which when you remove the dip will have damaged your paint. PlastiDip specific thinner doesn't damage the paint underneath.

If however your truck is abused quite hard either for work or off road then dip isn't tough enough. You'll spend too much time and money on rattle cans repairing it. Which is easy to do but the cans aren't cheap and don't go far. For this reason I ended up removing it and doing a respray with Upol Raptor.

If you spray Raptor from the gun supplied you get a very thick mottled finish. Which is good for truck beds. But we spoke to Upol and they said it can be thinned with regular paint thinners 10%. That enables it to be sprayed from a 1.5mm nozzle. It's a matte finish but surprisingly smooth. To be honest it's damn perfect and better than I was hoping for. Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I'm planning on buying some of Halfords own version of the plasti dip for my arches this weekend, has anyone used this stuff before?

Interesting. Never knew Halfords had made one too. I say go for it. I'd trust the Halfords brand name over the cheap PlastDip knock offs that have ruined a lot of paint jobs.

I might use some PlastiDip to do some black accents on my truck. Door pillars to be precise. But I also might make them permanent as I do plan on doing an Animal graphic too. And that can't be PlastiDip.

I think yours would look great with a black bonnet @Yoda

What's the graphic you have in mind?

We did do a rendering with a black bonnet. Amongst many other orange themed options. I didn't like it though. Reminded me too much of a Ricer.

This rendering was always meant to be the final paint job.

You can see the door pillars and canopy window surrounds are black. The graphic is ripped from a 4th Gen. It was never actually like that on a 3rd Gen. We need to make up the dimensions of the graphic on a Vector program (beyond my skill set) to make sure it will fit a 3rd Gen correctly, then take the program to a Vynil cutter. The text at the bottom is my company website in Animal font. The V8 has taken priority though so completing the paint job as it was always meant to be is now ear marked for summer 2016.

As far as I'm aware, you clean the bodywork then spray on thin coats (4-5), leaving to dry for 5 mins in between.

Don't think you need to mask as such, as it just peels off, you can remove the over spray quite easily, check out the YouTube videos, looks quite impressive!

Plasti dip is pretty easy to apply. Just clean the truck properly and then mask off. Best to apply up to 8 thin coats using a specialist spray gun to get the best finish.

DONT MASK OFF. BIG MISTAKE. PlastiDip peels to an edge. Watch the videos on it. If you mask to an edge you will tear the dip when you pull the masking off. You need to clean the truck to the same standard that a regular paint job would have.

You can mask large areas like the windows and wind ewe but DON'T mask up to the edge. Leave a few inches between the masking and the edge. A perfect edge is achieved by peeling the overspray. So you just make sure you create enough overspray that it peels too. Too little and it won't form a film and won't peel. You'll be rubbing it off.
