Sticky Gears

#1 by bazzer933 , Sun Dec 27, 2015 9:43 am

Hi all first post nice to meet you all,

Season Greetings

I have a 2011 Barbarian ,, when its cold it is a nightmare dropping down into 2nd gear fine going up the gears , sometimes reverse a little sticky ( not often though ) ,, after about 10 miles its seems fine and changes perfect ,, I bought the Barbarian approx 6 months ago,, the dealer I bought it from is 130 miles from me ,, I took it back when I first noticed it ,, they changed the clutch and said they changed 5th gear and refurbished the box , On the way home I got 5 miles down the road noticed it seemed no different , By the time I got back to the garage it had warmed up again and changed gear smoothly again , Drove it home and now cold weather is here it deffo seems worse,, I know its not a car and have had numerous l200 so know the gears can be a little sticky but this is near impossible to get in 2nd when cold,, Dont fancy another 300mile round trip.

Any ideas what the issue can be I thought maybe wrong oil had been used ?
I saw on previous posts there may be someone who specialises in these up here in Scotland does anyone have a contact number ?

Thanks in adavance

It's fine here mate how many miles has the truck done? Was the G Box fluid changed. Could be knackered syncros

Its done 56000 ,, the guy at the dealership said he needed to get it back in to check what oil the mechanic had used ,, I really dont fancy a 300 miles to check oil ,, I was going to just get someone to flush and change to see if make a difference ,, when it first went in they thought it was syncros but said it was fine ,, seemingly did a full rebuild ,, I took it to a garage closer to home who said deffo been all sealed up as though clutch and box were out but could not tell what had been done,

its worth dropping the fluid out and putting in fresh of the correct grade you could do that youself easier than an oil change

It is perhaps the wrong viscosity of oil, I had this with my classic, particularly between second to third when cold.

I changed the gearbox oil and added a tube of molyslip at the same time, whilst it did not completely cure the issue it made a noticeable improvement from cold.

I have a similar issue with the gearbox in my Land Rover, but I think it's the second gear synchro, I going to get the box recon'ed in the next couple of months though.

If it only does it cold then surely something is tight in the box and only frees up when it gets warm and expands. Too heavier oil could help towards this sometimes. Was the correct gear oil used??

First and foremost I wouldn't take a dealers word that they "overhauled" the box, most dealer mechanics are little more than fitters, who struggle to do much more than basic servicing, and it may be the case that they simply slipped the box out to have a butchers at the clutch.

Is it under warranty? If so then don't touch it yourself or instruct a third party without the go ahead from the warranty provider, also check which type of warranty, many do not require a dealer to carry out the work, as long as the chosen repairer is VAT registered and uses genuine parts.

If it is not under warranty then the first thing I'd be looking at doing would be to change the gearbox oil for OE spec fluid ensuring the correct viscosity, I would also consider an additive such as molyslip.

I terms of a repairer, just about anyone can take a gearbox off but very few places will have onsite expertise to inspect / rebuild gearboxes, and even fewer in Scotland who specialise in Jap 4x4's. I am in Glasgow so I know not of anyone in your neck of the woods, but perhaps @Tam might?

Failing that give Stathearn engineering a call, they are a well regarded Land Rover specialist, however if they cannot do the job they will doubtless have knowledge of someone who can.

Its not under warranty ,, The guy however assured me he would extend the warranty an extra 3 months as a guarantee for work done ( ballocks it seems ) , its been closer t 4 months now as he has dodged me for about 6 weeks , Ill get on the phone again tomorrow and see if I can get a hold of him ,, failing that ill deffo change the oil and add molyslip,, thanks for help .

I'm assuming when you refer to the seller as "dealership" you are not talking about a Mitsubishi dealer and simply referring to a used car trader?

It certainly sounds as if they have had a quick squint at the clutch to see if ther is meat on it, perhaps changed the oil and buttoned it back up, they may have popped an inspection cover off he box for a quick look, but I very much doubt that they have had the internals out of the box, as if they had done a "full rebuild" then you wouldn't be experiencing exactly the same issue as pre repair.

Citizens advice / Trading standards is another option to consider if your being fobbed off.
