Simple answer is no. Different boxes, prop shafts, gearbox mounts and engine mounts.

No. The 2.8 can be done but it doesn't swap "straight" in. I've read a post from a guy that did it and it seems as complicated as any other conversion. Speaking of which: Guideline to a 1UZ conversion

Parts wise it would compare fairly evenly which ever route you went. The 2.8 and 1UZ are the best candidates for the quickest 'easiest' conversion. But no conversion is easy.

Because it's a 4D56. And it happens in more than a few trucks.

That was always my understanding as well, however I recently spoke with a guy who owns a garage in Ayrshire and we were discussing the inherently shitey 2.5 4D56 and he told me that he had an early classic as the garage truck and it popped a head then later spun a shell, and he replaced it with a 2.8 from a pajero breaker he had, and despite being advised that it was a complicated transplant, he found it to be a very straight forward affair.

I did query this and he stated that he used the ancillaries from the donor Paj and the only mod he had to do was to reverse (or swap?) the sump. I'm sure it was not as simple as he described and I'm unaware as to how much of the donor he used I.e gearboxes props etc, but the guy's bread and butter was high end performance tuning of evo's etc, so I had no reason to doubt him.

I must admit I would like to see both side by side to see exactly what's involved.

It's Deffo different gearbox mount. 2 mounts on the bottom as opposed to the 2.5's one. And props have output shafts of 40mm on the paj box compared to 36mm on the 2.5 box. But everything else could be easily swapped I suppose. And thinking about it the gearbox cross members are bolt on objects so could be easily swapped. So In theory it's just the probs that are awkward. Easy enough.

There's no doubt it's arguably the easiest conversion. The Facebook post I read the guy had needed to do gearbox and engine mounts as they were different. Also prop shaft needed shortening. If it's a mechanical pump, which I think all 2.8's were?, then from there on in its certainly pretty straight forward.

Suffice to say I would do it over another 2.5. And it's probably cheaper too.
