That's great bud I will try the new rad cap tomorrow and post the results.I wouldn't expect any freebies but if you can do it cheaper than The garage cost a weekend in premier Inn castleford could be on the cards 👍

Not a prob. Get it done in a day.
Check the hose that goes from the rad cap to expansion bottle 2. And the expansion bottle cap seal. If they have a slight hole in it then it forces water out into the bottle when warm but when it cools it will draw air back in to the coolant system. Same principle as a bust rad cap really. Have you checked the rad for cold spots??

To remove air locks u need to open the uppermost hole on the coolant system on the engine. Naturally air will be at the top of the system. On mine I remove the coolant temp sender. Not sure what it is on the 2.5. @123hotchef will prob know. I fill mine up till it comes out of the sender unit hole then do it back up. Then keep filling up the rad whilst regularly squeezing the rad hose till the rad is full. Then fill expansion bottle up. Get it up to temp and then re check. Then re check a couple of days later. I've never had a problem doing it like this.

i never had to take my temp sensor out I just drove the front up the ramps so the rad cap was the highest point and then filled it up

temp sensor is easy to remove though

OK I've replaced rad cap checked the expansion tank cap and the rubber seal seems to be OK. The small hose between rad seems to be OK, all I done was take hose off from radiator end and blew through it didn't seem to be any blockage but that wouldn't tell me if there were any pin size holes in it. I tried to feel for any cold spots on radiator but it was quite awkward to get into,The top was quite warm but not hot and the bottom was quite cold as was the bottom hose.

A strange thing though is after fitting new cap and running for a while I let it cool for about 30 mins and when I went back out to it and turned on ignition the temp gauge went straight to around a quarter when it would normally be at the bottom.

Not saying this will do the same for you but I have had more or less the same symptoms as you. What I did was to drain right down, then use one of the cooling system flush things and give it all a good flush through. Then replaced rad cap and themostat and the small hose from rad to expansion bottle. Lifted front end and filled back up with new coolant/anti freeze and it's been perfect ever since.
Like I say not saying it's any good for you but has def cured my problems.

Cheers

Thanks guys I will give it a good flush tomorrow trying the dishwashwasher tabs 👍weather permitting and order a new stat. Does it matter what antifreeze I put in? Do I just break the tabs up and drop the radiator then run it until up to temp then flush.

I was late in getting new thermostat and coolant but I have them now.I think I've found the stat but looks difficult to get at, am I right in saying it's connected to bottom rad hose?

Also if this is it (Left side of engine beside oil filter) Am I easier removing air filter/Housing to get at the thermostat? .

Sorry for all the amateur questions.

I took air filter box off and it was a 5 min job to replace the old one. Like I say I had almost identical symptoms to you last week and the few easy bits I mentioned cured it and no problems since. Oh and I used Prestone Coolant/antifreeze
Cheers
