Coolant issues

#1 by geordiewarrior , Fri Jan 22, 2016 10:28 pm

Hi I posted this on another section of site but now I've got new password I will post here too.

After driving around 150 miles I noticed the temp gauge reach around 3/4 mark I stopped to check coolant level and it was just over the max mark never thinking to check radiator cap so carried on.The gauge fluctuated between half and 3/4 all the time never went over that.

After driving short distances around the town I never noticed any overheating but today I drove about 1 mile and stopped at a friends house and checked the radiator and needed about 2 ltrs to fill it although the header tank was still on max.
When I took the cap off the rad the header tank gurgled quite a lot, I Google what could cause this and to run the engine and remove header tank cap and check for bubbles but there was none.

After advice from here I will replace the rad cap tomorrow and try it on a run. Really can't afford any major repairs just now I've just finished paying for a secondhand gear/transfer box and fitting.

Glad you managed to log in again! ... let us know about the rad cap...

When was the coolant last changed, could be an airlock ?

Gurgling is a sign of an air lock is it not....

Just a quick update I couldn't get a new rad cap yesterday and had to go on an hours drive so I took the chance and keeping a close eye on the temp gauge and it never went over half way. I'm a bit confused with this.

I had a blockage in my rad before that caused the temp to rise , you just never know!

New rad cap tomorrow they had none in stock but I'm not holding my breath that it will make any difference.I have been told a sniff test is not so conclusive on Diesel engines but to try a pressure test instead. The test is £48+ vat it there any tests I could do myself without costing too much? To see if it is a head, head gasket or block failure.

I keep a spare Rad-Cap in my truck for just this eventuality. For the sake of £5 it's worth doing.

£5 ? Mine is 3× that at £17 but still I would be like a dog with 2 tails if it sorts my problem better than the 1k minimum I have been told it will cost if it needs a HG
😕

Thanks badger I have been told to try it by several mechanics that say nothing to loose, I was concerned about clogging up waterways and such but they say it's not an issue.

Thanks Jon did you have the head taken off after the steel seal failed to fix if so did it gunk up the coolant system?

Long story, I got rid of the Disco soon after and the new owner had a lot of problems because of the 'sealant'

Things like Steel seal very rarely work , you have to follow the instructions to the letter ( and prove it , if you want your money back)...yes they do work, but I would not expect it to last, and then you could have all sorts of other problems cleaning it all up....

Be less than £500 for HG. That's all mine was with new built up head. It's the labour that costs. If your near me il help you do it for a brew.

As Mallinman says £1000 is a lot ... if you don't need a new head then the bill is even less , providing a garage isn't doing it!

I did a fork lift with mitzy's 2.0 petrol engine in last week and it only cost 300 notes to do. That was with head skim, new head bolts, gaskets, timing belts, spark plugs, new oil and filters and coolant.
But took me a day to do it plodding along which a garage would charge 300-600 for
