apparantly

and I quote
For the petrol version of the P12 it is located in the fuel tank as part of the pump, I was under the impression they were a lifetime filter

Would the fact it will only rev to 2500 when being driven be a clue to what is amiss, but will rev upt 4000 before it develops a slight misfire

One of my daughters had a petrol powered Nissan (albeit a Micra). That had a problem with water in fuel. The fuel pick up/filter was accessed from under the rear seat, needed a big frick off type of spinner/puller/parrallel jawed device to get it out. There was a filter on that assembly, which had crud in it. Tank drained, wiped out with rags, etc. Filter blown out with airline, now sorted, and car has since done another couple of years .. I think Machine Mart sell the tool for removing the beastie!

sounds like the electronic ignition module that's causing the problem

Possibly not, from experience of eml lights, they are not always related to the problem indicated also the misfire may not be enough to trigger a fault? just a thought but regarding the blocked cat this may be caused by a misfire creating unburnt fuel causing the blocked cat.

can you not set something up to bypass the fuel tank and run it from a bottle if its playing up when stationary? @ronniecabers
