White smoke after head gasket replacement

#1 by Wattonite , Sat May 20, 2017 6:47 pm

Howdy, hoping for an expert opinion. (Or at least a wild guess), i have just replaced the head gasket, cam belts etc on a 2003 warrior (bought with a head fault, exhaust gasses in water and had a new head thrown in).
Fired up ok, looked like B belt was out of time, and im fairly certain that its now timed ok..... but....... smokes on start up, white as far as i can see and does not clear after 5 to 10 mins.
I cant give it an italian tune as its not road legal at mo, does not seem to be leaking to water system, so im lost as to why, or what it could be?
Any advise or ideas would be great, as i dont want to have to get it to a teeth sucking garage mechanic yet!
Cheers in advance n be gentle(ish)

Was the spare head new or secondhand if the latter it may be warped or cracked.Did you get it checked before fitting it.

Home job by me, parts from Milner's, new bolts, 3 stage, asked on here for settings as lots of conflicting answers elsewhere, think it was 29nm (went round 4 times to make sure all was set to 29 before moving on) then 59(can't remember exactly without going back into messages) and final at123nm.

Well, assuming the head has been fitted correctly and its not a dud (though I'm still a little sceptical about 123Nm being the right torque setting, but that's another story), then white smoke is unburned diesel (if it is steam, then the head is not fitted right or is duff). Unburned diesel smoke will stink and sting the eyes - most likely culprit for this is air in the fuel, make sure the fuel system is bled properly and not leaking air. Other likely cause is incorrect timing, either the belt not installed right, or the injector pump timing not right. If you have engine management light on, then maybe a sensor is broken, air temp sensor, engine temp sensor for example can all have this effect. Does the engine management light come on with ignition and then go out when engine started? some ****s do remove them...

No egr or cooler, all removed / bypassed on the cooling side. Timing is correct as far as I can tell, not sure about the management light, never looked to see if it came on before starting, will check tomorrow, how do I bleed the fuel system, all I did was popped pipes off the injectors, replaced bits, swapped injectors over n started her up! I guess I needed to do something else!!
Not sure if it stinks n stings eyes, it was kin windy, and I didn't give it a sniff, is there a way(other than taking to a garage) of telling if its water or unburnt diesel?
Thanks guys.

Mate - if yume smoking your loosing either power or efficiency, simple as, diesels running properly shouldn't smoke, at all. Start the hate ;)

I agree, but white or whiteish smoke worries me, blue, hey ho, top the oil n keep rolling, black, bit less mpg, never mind, but white means probs.......

@Wattonite - try putting a coldish sheet of glass behind the exhaust - if you get condensation on it, then it's steam.

Well, I re checked timing today, all seems fine, ran it up, rad cap off, whitefish smoke, put glass behind to see if it condensed into water, it didn't 👍, got fully warm and no bubbles in rad, still smoked for a while n then seemed to clear??
Switched off, had a cuppa etc, hour later, started up again and smokey again. Somewhat confused, will have to make it road legal and see how it goes unless someone has any ideas or advice........

Quite a bit, seems to puff out at low revs, certainly more than I would like to see n way more than my old surf used to( but that was always black!), like i said, I guess that I will have to make her legal n see how it goes on a proper run / normal use. At least I have another vehicle, so it's only money!!

Does it only do it when the engine is cold then? could be glow plugs if so, but then would be harder to start - does it fire straight up when cold? Did you check the engine management light?

Engine light goes out once running, glowplugs meter out ok n she fires up ok, but as it was only stopped for about an hour, after getting fully warm, im not so sure about it only doing it when cold. Wont get a chance to do anything to it for just over a week now due to work commitments, so i will have to wait to try anything else. Cheers guys😁

Does the engine sound ok when it's going.
Or knocky??
Does it rev up fine. Not sluggish.

It seems to rev up ok, obviously this is stationary, so no idea under load yet, possibly a bit knocky, but not having had one before to compare it against, i cant be sure. Old surf was smoother........
