RE: What Has Gone Wrong With Your Pick-Up Truck

Hi

2004 4work , white , 129,000 ( bought at 46.000) , no bells or whistles just a good work horse , used every day for business use.

Problems
Crank pulley de laminating , cam belt jumped teeth but engine saved !!! , treat as a service item on every belt change.

Leaf springs broken x 2 , people say oil / grease them , my view is the oil or grease attracts dirt and becomes a grinding paste , just one of those things

Thats it , I service the truck every 5k engine oil and filters (milners) and get the grease gun out , while Im below clean and grease brake and fuel lines. Some may say every 5K is excessive but in my view oil is cheaper than a new / rebuilt engine , I think the key to keeping the truck going is servicing and not driving it like a hot hatch.

So.........

Got everything together to service the truck today, apart from forgetting to order one of those magnetic sump plugs. Dropped some engine flush in ready to change the oil - job done.

Jacked up the truck, spread out cardboard, had my catch drums all ready and started to undo the sump plug. Undid it and turned, and turned, and turned, and turned. Not coming off! Phoned up a mate of mine for advice and he reckons the thread inside the sump pan has come loose from over torqueing it when I put it on and the thread is just spinning in the sump!!

So, Ive ordered a new oil sump gasket for the morning and will drop the pan on my next day off, Thursday. That'll be fun with 7.5 litres of oil behind it!!
Regarding the sump thread, Im just gonna JB Weld it it back into place instead of getting it spot welded (not sure if its copper) and REMEMBER to not over torque it. Pain in the rear as it needs servicing before its MOT on friday.

My question is... will engine flush have any negative effects whilst living in the engine for a few days with short journeys involved??

2004 Warrior, sitting at 108 thousand.

Had a propshaft bearing fail. Constanst droning becoming rumbling becoming ridiculously loud over the months.
Rear springs failed, and Milners supplied some of their heavy duty numbers.
Steering pump is leaking. Can't afford to replace just now, so trying some additives to the fluid for now.
One of the front ball joints has a pinhole in the rubber seal, so on the to do list
4x4 light is flashing, to trace the issue
EML comes on quite a bit, to trace the issue.

04 Silver Warrior. DeCat, EGR gone, S/S exhaust, twin scoops & spots, Nightbreakers all round, side floods, BFG's, CB on sometimes. 110k miles and counting.

Have to get the truck on a ramp tomorrow. Tried to take the sump pan off, new gasket, filter, oil and magnetic plug...
Realised half way through the sump pan bolts, I need to drop the axle to get to the back ones!! Oh well, at least I've bought the parts and its being MOTed on the afternoon

Just drop the ARB and get a 1/4" ratchet with a UJ on it and you can get the sump off without moving the axle.

2000 4life double cab. Just pinged through 97,000.

I've got the full history, even down to invoices for bulbs and wiper blades. Aside from a new clutch at 79k, it's had nothing beyond servicing and reasonable wear.

After 217,000 miles I thought I was about to spend my next few months wages on the MOT Fails. So I started going through the test areas methodically, Took her for the test and was relieved to find she failed just on the Steering Idler £67 plus MOT fee and she passed. Happy as Larry

13 months on from purchase. Has now rolled past 100k. All that a gone wrong is a lazy glow plug relay, and a blocked washer jet. Bloody good going for a decade and a half old commercial vehicle.

Over 2 and a half tears of ownership, only big problems were rotten fuel system and the diesel pump , the back axle damage was owner inflicted by not doing the pinion seal

03 warrior bought last month as a fixer up 117k short block replaced sept (got receipt). running rough so plugged it in came up with boost sensor, checked vacuum pipes first to find all arse for tit, sorted that went to check pump timing to find mounting bracket to block with one cross threaded bolt and other one nowhere to be seen. Now need to remove pump totally to clean threads in block. Glad I wasn't one who paid garage for work. Third owner since work was done, previous owner had it to garage but no joy just glad I'm reasonably competent diy'er and don't have to rely on so called mechanics

I had the fuel rail snap on me a few weeks ago, bought new one from Mitzi Bits for £30 half hour dismantle and re-fit and good to go. Latest problem is the alternator, looks like voltage regulator or bushes prob. I was pointed to a regulator box on ebay by another forum member now waiting for delivery, in the mean time decided to remove alternator in readiness for replacing regulator & bushes, not a standard dismantle job... cant remove from underneath due to obstructions, looking at some videos and reading up on how to remove the alternator what a nightmare lol. got to remove allsorts of stuff including air filter and piping, oil filter, oil supply and return pipes to rear of alternator, electric cables, and that inc a small cable with a small retaining nut that is in the most tight place lol.

2003 warrior, had 2 years, now on 129k full service history.had a overheating issue in the early days of ownership..100 quid at mitzi and all been good since.ive spent money on the truck, replaced all bushes, shocks spring hangers etc etc,but that's just because I'm fussy, not because it was needed.also added bits but..in two years it's cost me naff all really.

I think I've detected the only real faulty my ageing classic has ever had. A very slight weep from the rear of the tank at the pressed seam half way up. Takes weeks for a drip to form. Gonna run the tank low, clean it up and seal it from outside.

102k miles and that'll be the first real fault the old girl has ever had, although I'm replacing all the shocks with Monroe Adventures as well.

Hmmm ....right then

54000 miles - Headgasket ...at service new bottom pulley - Clutch also
6 months later - Headgsket! ( dodgy work by garage.....truck has ( and will ) never go back to that garage !!
6 Months later - Headgasket - ( was sent wrong headbolts for no2 h/g , so never went back together correctly ...knew I was on borrowed time )

Several stiicky Caliper Pins
Another clutch at about 70,000 ( think my wife has dodgy clutch foot !..plus towed some really heavy loads ....)
83,000 miles ish ..new cambelt after tensioner packed up, thankfully caught it just in time ( as when belt was off you could see through the belt! )
New Leaf springs

Other than that its been 100% reliable!
