That’s all looking so clean. Wonder wat it will be like after the usual Landy oil leaks. Lol
Nice job tho. Like the perfectionism going into it.

Hopefully going to cut down on the traditional leaks a little bit, but that's probably why the chassis hasn't rusted out before now... may need to throw some oil all over it to keep it preserved.

Running gear

#29 by Heathen , Thu Nov 09, 2017 1:40 am

Here's some of the latest pictures. All the running gear is pretty much in in place now.

This is of the rear suspension, axle and prop shaft:

I made some check straps out of a lorry cargo strap (original series 3 had them in leather, which sounded a bit crap). These stop the shock absorber from taking the full weight of the axle when fully articulated down. Ours stop the axle about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch before the max stretch of the shock absorber is reached, so we loose a bit of articulation, but hopefully gain better life out of the shocks - surprising about how many people say they don't bother running with check straps whilst also complaining their shocks only last 6 months... just have to see on that one.

Extended front shackles (standard on military long wheel base models) had been put on by the previous owner - they hadn't thought about this too hard, cos when we put it all back together, even on maximum extension the front prop was a good inch short of reaching the output flange on the gearbox (The prop shafts on these have a splined section that allow them to stretch and contract about 2"). They must have just jacked the whole lot up and thrown them in, not realising they were distorting the hell out of the gerbox and engine mounts and really buggering up the whole front transmission. People who have done this properly use an extended prop shaft, and change the angle that the front axle sits on the springs to keep the flanges of the prop parallel, which is vital to to avoid both vibration and wear on the transfer box. Might think about doing this at some later date, but it only gains around 1/2" lift for a lot of work, so for now we're reverting back to the standard shackles. Front fits together nicely with the springs hung on the centre pin of the extended shackles, which is about the same length as the standard ones:

Out with the old, in with the bit less old

#31 by Heathen , Thu Nov 09, 2017 11:14 pm

With all the chassis bits done on the slightly less skanky than it was series 3, it was pushed outside and hidden under a 'tent'. Unfortunately we don't have space for 2 vehicles in there at the same time. I am working on that one though as I'm pretty sure that back in the 90's I remember fitting a couple of Datsun 280ZX in there with room to spare for a couple of engines+gearbox.

"Black beauty" now in the silo ready for engine removal and general disco disrepect and abuse. Might have got a bit too tasty with the pressure washer yesterday, cos the little sh** was very reluctant to start up today (ho-shyte what have I done ?). Bit too late to back out now though as I ordered a grands worth of engine conversion parts off Steve Parker's yesterday. At least I have a new fuel filter to try...

Busy day

#34 by Heathen , Sun Nov 12, 2017 12:03 am

Wasn't much looking forward to getting the engine out of the Disco, mainly because it was totally covered in crud. So just started early today and cracked on with it:

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Didn't quite have the lift to clear the front as I didn't want to have the crane on max extension, so just cut the slam panel out - pretty sure 'Beauty' is written off now - one more bites the dust

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Tried not to squash the girlfriend's dog

Then gave it a clean up:

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

By the way, when the lazy b******* at your local clutch centre can't be arsed to change the release bearing, this is what your new clutch ends up looking like very quickly - the tips of the release forks get eaten through by the bearing face. On my old peugeot when I changed the clutch there was only about 5 forks left - I found the ends of all the others in the bottom of the bell housing.

Engine in

#35 by Heathen , Mon Dec 04, 2017 5:54 pm

Engine went in today - fair bit of work to get to this point. A lot of time spent making up special tools to do the engine servicing.

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

can't wait to get it fired up now and see where all the oil leaks are.

Start yur enjins

#37 by Heathen , Mon Jan 29, 2018 7:38 pm

Been a while since we've done anything on the old slapper, but after a very extended Christmas / new year break, got back to it a few days ago. The main goal was to get the engine fired up as it's been sitting around a while now with no oil, coolant or diesel in it.

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Attached the radiator, which sits in the original disco housing but modified to make it narrower, as before it also held the intercooler. This is now mounted in front and slightly overlapping the rad as the space between the inner wings is very tight. This all bolts up to the front panel and sits on brackets mounted on the back of the front cross member. Graeme made up some brackets to mount the original Kenwood fan that was previously installed in the truck. Quite a lot of work here - most of which will never be seen

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Plumbed all the shiny new pipes into the coolant system - had to jerry rig positions for the header tank and heater matrix to make it all water tight. Got the intercooler plugged in and the oil cooler hoses - oil cooler is built into the main radiator. Filled up with oil, and tap water (to give the system a good flush out before using coolant) and ran the fuel line striaght to a can of diesel as you do. Then plugged in a battery - just earthed to the engine block and live to the starter, plus two wires to the stop and starter solenoids and all ready to give it a go - just how easy is it to steal an old diesel?

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Took a while to get the fuel up to the pump, and then :

Got to say I'm loving that

bulkhead strip

#40 by Heathen , Thu Feb 01, 2018 7:07 pm

Stripped everything off the bulkhead today, ready for a refurb :

Not looking too bad - bit of welding to do at the bottom, but a lot better than many others I've seen, Truck was yellow to start with, then blue, before finally settling on bog standard landy green... We're not going to strip/repaint it till we get some dryer weather - plenty more to be getting on with though.

All done

#44 by Heathen , Sun May 19, 2019 5:04 pm

Hi @krutly - we finished it in February - sorry I stopped writing it up, but was too much like hard work! It all took a lot longer than we had planned for, and there's still a few finishing touches to catch up on. Will get some more photos up when I get back to Cornwall.
