Relay confusion

#1 by Yoda , Sun Aug 12, 2012 6:44 pm

Last thing to do for the WI is connect the relay. The wiring diagram shows which pins to use by number. However I can't be certain which pin is which from looking at the relay. Below is a photo of the relay with the pin numbers on top, and held next to it is the wiring loom plug.

So which pin number represents which connection in the plug?

Are the numbers not on the under-side of the realy as well?
Should be one next to each terminal

Luke, as you are looking at the picture of the socket, 30 at the top, 87a below that and 87 at the bottom.... in a normal layout pin 85 would be to the right and 86 to the left.
If you look under the relay, the numbers are next to the pins.....

Or' looking at your photo of the loom plug (providing it is the same as a 'standard' mitsubishi relay:

The terminals on the right and left will be 85 & 86
the one at the top will be 30
the one in the middle will be 87a
and the one at the bottom will be 87

If your relay does not have numbers at the bottom I would check the terminals are the correct way round though as they vary

Yoda: have you ever heard of something called a relay holder?
Also known as a Relay Base, Relay Mount or maybe even a crimp-on-spade terminal?

LezT: look at the relay that has been done on the left of the photo
And remember what you see for a post titled 'intermittent relay problem with my WI'

Crimp on terminals tend to become faulty after a while though eh! Used enough of them as an alarm engineer. Not to mention the corrosion effect of being submersed in water. You can't beat a soldered join!

The relays to the left run my spot lights anyway!;)

Luke I must agree with Billy, you are partially right, but the solder will corrode if left exposed, solder and heat shrink yes, just solder is not really the right way to go, I personally would always use a relay base in the engine compartment and will use crimp terminals if in a protected invironment. Solder on its own is a stronger mechanical and electrical joint............. but will not last if exposed, or in close proximity to silicone sealant.

Fair enough. Though there are several factory relays in the L200 that are direct mounted to the wings. But I take your advice.....

But they have relay bases that offer protection to the actual connection between the base and the relay, the water only get splashed onto the outer of the pins.. as you say as well Luke they are mounted up on the wings, just need to protect the terminalsof the spots relay..
