Need new brake pads

#1 by Yoda , Wed Aug 29, 2012 10:02 am

My brake pads have recently started squealing when cold. Think I'm right in saying this means I need new ones. Assuming I should look at changing all four, not just fronts? Any recommendations on type, brand or supplier?

I always have changed pad/shoes across the axels. The only thing with doing all four coners at the same time is until they bed in the stopping power will greatly reduced. Another thing, do you have disc/disc or disc/drum?

Drums on the rear. That's standard isn't it?

The way to look at it is like Kev says do the worst ones first and give a couple of weeks to bed in then do the others.Last thing you want in a 2t truck is to have to do an emergency stop and find the brakes are still bedding in and not stopping you like you expected

Mine are squeeling and yet all are fine.

I did the fronts as I thought it was them, but thy were only half worn, but changed em anyway, checked rear shoes and they had loads of life left too, so cleaned roughed em up adjusted and re fitted.

Still get the squeel though and sounds like its coming from the rear, any one else suffer from this ??

my first set of pads was required at 94k, the rear shoes were still near good as new - learn to use your gearbox not your brakes

I have always engine braked since I learnt to drive. But with the new engine I got out of the habit as I didn't want to strain it further while running in. What engine braking increasing pad life but reducing clutch life?

should not cause undue clutch problems, again original clutch untill the engine went pop, did not look overly worn either, clutch cyl fluid had never been changed or topped up and was only about 1/4 inch down from original

I would check the friction material left on the pads before ordering, they may be ok for awhile yet BUT the squeeling could be the pads abit seized in the carrier slider OR the actual sliders pins themselves seized. Only changed what needs changed or it gets expensive.
