Speedo recalibration

#1 by animal57 , Sun Dec 17, 2017 12:07 pm

Hi guys.

I have a 57 plate animal (B40 DiD) and I'm currently running the standard 245/65/17 BFG AT's. I am looking to change the boots to Copper STT muds and increase the size to 265/70/17. Just a couple of questions really.

I think from looking through the forum that they will fit with no mods, is this right or would I be better at looking into a 2" suspension lift?

Secondly, my insurance requires the speedo to be recalibrated to accommodate the larger size. Is this an easy thing to do, or is it not really necessary? One of the tyre calculators gives the overall diameter increase as 7% so would be doing 32.1mph when speedo reads 30mph.

This has probably been asked loads of times before but I can't track down a definitive answer on the speedo recalibration.

Cheers.

Dan.

I read up on this a while ago. If I remember right it is illegal to have a speedo that reads lower than the speed you are doing, so many manufacturers callibrate high when they leave the factory to err on the safe side, giving room for maneuvre when putting larger tyres on etrc... mine fitted with standard tyres definitely reads higher on the speedo than I'm doing.

your still inside the 10% margin you will just have to keep a close eye on your speedo more regularly

If your insurance requires it you better get a garage to provide a receipt for the work, else in the event of a claim you will be out on your ear... or change insurer to one who isn't going to whine.

In terms of fitment, somebody with a B40 should be along soon enough to comment on whether the body lift is needed.

I went from 265/70/16s on my classic to 285/75/16s and it meant that when the speedo showed 28 I was actually doing 30 and at 55 I was doing 60.

I dont remember anyone mentioning that they've had their speedo recalibrated, you may have to speak to your local mitsubishi dealer to see if this is posssible

or just stay with the same tyres size

Cheers guys. I figured that the recalibration thing was just the insurer being a pain. I've checked the current speeds against sat nav and hand held GPS and the speedo reads at almost 8% under so should be ok but I'll run it past Mitsi when they repair the leaking rear window (again). I could keep the same size tyre krutly, but wheres the fun in that? Seriously though, I need just a little more clearance as my log yard is up a lane that has tractors cutting it up every day and I seem to be constantly under the truck clearing lumps of crap off just in case they drop out and clatter a nice expensive school run landrover.

One last thing, do you guys know of a decent garage in oxford who is used to dealing with L200?

On original 245 65 17 Speedo reads 70 - sat nav reads 66
With Cooper AT3 265 65 17 fitted....... Speedo reads 70 - sat nav reads 68

Having chatted to other members in the past, who have fitted the max size you can go to without trimming = 265 70 17
They have said, Speedo reads 70 - sat nav reads 70
