cracked engine block ?

#1 by ock , Fri Mar 09, 2018 6:40 pm

hi, not be on for a while, hope everybody`s well

right long story short, I`ve got a 2006 classic L200, at about 100`000 miles the head gasket went, had that replaced, new belts etc and all was good, then the week before Christmas she was taking ages to get up to temp, I thought this was probably the thermostat, but then between Christmas and new year when I was out on a longish run the temp kept shooting up and dropping back down to normal, it did this when my head gasket went last time, I stopped to check the expansion tank and there was the dreaded stream of bubbles coming up through, I got home and checked the water the next morning and the tank was empty and so was the rad, she`s only done 14`000 since the gasket was replaced,
I took her back to my local 4x4 garage, the guys who repaired her last time, they replaced the head gasket, the old one had failed, you could see where it had blown, I had the truck back but it was the same as before, ages to get up to temp, temp shooting up and down on a run and a constant stream of bubbles in the tank, I took it back and they checked my water pump which they said was good, the guy they had sent the head to to be skimmed and checked couldn`t remember if he had tested the head or not ! so they thought it was probably the head that had gone, they sent the head back to him, he said the head was ok and thinks its the block that is cracked, the guys at the garage aren`t convinced its the block as they can`t see any damage and I think he`s lost faith in the guy who was meant to test the head, he`s going to send the head off again to have it tested, I guess by someone else,
so what do you guys think ? how common are the blocks to cracking ? I can remember that it used to pop the dipstick out now and again in the past, but its not done that in a while, put that down to a blocked breather
thanks

Had the same problem with mine 3 head gaskets and 1 brand new head and still had bubbles and was driving us mad. So we put a new engine in. when we stripped down the old engine there was a crack in the piston sleeve.

bugger ! well I can get a new long engine from milners for just under £2000, think if the head comes back as good I might have to go down that route

you need a pretty big press to put the sleeve (liner) in we did think about doing it but couldn't be without the truck as rental would of cost a fortune. yes its engine out.

To my knowledge there are no liners in these engines , they are put in as a repair and would need the block machining oversize to press them in, Having not done one i couldn't tell you weather putting a liner in would sort a cracked block i don't know, It wont with rover V8s as the water comes round the liner.

i hear you Dave cheaper and more reliable we hope with a new engine if you account for rental and loss of earnings

I have a bare block. It was re engineered when I got it. Cost me £400 but would take £200 as is needs cleaned up. All bores had been honed and mating face skimmed. No pistons, oilpump or crank. I would need to put it on a small pallet though as its still heavy and couriers wont single man lift it. Unless your close to Edinburgh to collect.

cool thanks Alan, I`ll let you know how he gets on, really hoping its the head, but deep down I don`t think it is, but if it is the block I may well have that off you
