Separating dual batterys

#1 by Linusp3 , Sat Apr 07, 2018 9:59 pm

Hi fellows

I recently bought a 2008 L200 with dual batteries under the hood (standard in Sweden). I plan to use the car as a overland vehicle so I’ll need to be able to power a fridge and some other goodies under the canopy. I’ve tried to look for wiring diagrams online to try and determine how the batteries are hooked up, and if it would be possible to separate them and use one as starter battery and the other as consumer battery (is that the correct term?).

One solution would be a separate battery on the flatbed, but I’d like to not have a third battery hooked up if there’s enough power under the hood already.

Does anyone know how to best/easiest feed two cables from the engine bay to the rear end of the car? I’d prefer not to line them under the car, but haven’t found any obvious ways to go via the frame or interior......

Thanks for your time!
Linus

best to clip the cables to the chassis if you ask me! We dont have duel batteries in the uk! I do now and use a smart relay so the 2nd battery charges it is also wired with a switch so i can start from it if required

Clip the cables to the chassis... could you be more specific, to me the chassis is the whole of the car (might be a translation error).
It’s the way with a smart relay between the batteries I’d like to go 👍🏻

The chassis rail use convoluted tubing to protect the cable and run it along side the brake or fuel lines.

You could keep the 2 batteries up front and have a 3rd in the rear with the smart relay

This is what it looks like. The left battery neg lead goes straight down to earth in the chassis. The pos lead trails off to hook up with a larger cluster just to the left of the main battery. All very neatly taped up
