Removing fuel tank...advise or suggestions?

#1 by Nik Rite , Tue May 01, 2018 5:00 pm

K74, twin cab..my tank stack pipes are in a mess so I've got the miners kit, pipes, gasket, nuts etc. Anyone any hints or tips on tank removal etc. Mine is an 06 so I'm hoping i might get away without replacing the tank. I gather the rust starts on the top so If I can get it all cleaned up with a wire brush I was going to hammerite it. I think the interesting bit might be removing the 6 nuts. Any tips or thoughts? Ta Nik

here's a quote from Jon grimsby

If you are changing the pick up pipes be very careful when removing the ring of 8mm nuts as the captivated bolts will shear easily, I soaked mine with a good penetrating spray and wire brushed the tops, then worked the nuts backwards and forwards a little bit at a time repeating spray and wire brush as I went along.

The tanks are indeed prone to rusting at the tops , this is due to there location and them picking all the mud and crap up and it sitting on the tank working its magic metal remover formula...mine became so thin you could push the side/top of thank in with no force at all

I just had a new fuel tank fitted today! The existing one was so old and rusty, i think the surface was actually porous and was causing repeated limp mode due to "fuel leak detected- large leak" errors. The seal also seemed to be leaking.
How much were you selling yours for Alan? Mine was just under £700 (but was fitted under warranty, tf). Was fitted in an hour or so.

Another tip for the ring bolts that hold the stack pipes , as above clean them thoroughly and warm them up with a small blow lamp , I use a creme brûlée one , little buggers come come off easy then

I ve got the four retaining bolts holding the tank on the move...now on to the filling and vent pipes. To lower the tank can I undo the screws behind the filler cap around the filler nozzle, and then lower the tank? I ask as separating the rubber filling hoses and their clips is a sh*t job ta Nik

I separated the filler and vent pipe from the tank, cut the flow and return rubber pipes ( replaced with new afterwards) , two of us lowered the fuel tank as there was still a couple of gallons left in it , could also be done with a trolley jack , follow the advice above for getting the stack pipes off the tank without breaking the studs , when you put the new stack pipes in don't push the strainer filter right up or it will block the fuel pipe and cause problems

Ok, thanks or the tip re the creme brûlée torch for the top bolts. got them all off...none broken.. What I did was wire brass brush them with a Dremel to clean all the crud /rust off. Then I heated the nut until it was nearly smoking and cooled it rapidly with plus gas. I them tapped then with a drift and hammer in all directions . Heated them up again and more plus gas. Then I used a dremel cutting disc to nearly splitting the nut. You can Just see a change in colour where the threads are beginning to show. I heated it again and plus gas. Then used a hammer and drift to tap the nut open...done. About 15 mins a nut... hope this helps someone. Had a look inside the tank..it looks surprisingly good. I'll keep you posted as I think this is my winter project. Nik
