Auto box sticking

#1 by RooMac , Sun Apr 07, 2019 4:57 pm

Afternoon all

Having an issue with the auto box in a 2011 barbarian sticking occasionally when towing, on hills/slopes.

Not all the time and (so far) not when it hasn't got the trailer on the back.it's not a heavy trailer either - an 8x5 one.

Read in the handbook about putting the gear selector into sports mode? Is this only for steep hills though or should I maybe be keeping it in sports mode all the time when towing?

Or do you think I may have a bigger issue?I did a search and found a thread about somebody with the same age of barbarian as I have, having the same problem - no idea if he fixed it or not....

Many thanks 👌

first question, when did you last do a box oil change and take the sump off to check the filter?

There have been instances of wiring looms chaffing on the ' tunnel ' on Auto boxes causing funny things to happen. Was originally thought to only be early B40s, but have seen a few around the age of yours also have wiring loom issues

Never buddy

It's done 48k miles and I just bought it last year.

Mitz schedule for the auto box fluids is 60k miles or 24000 miles (Normal/Severe usage) - very similar to the diffs as well btw.

Have you got any faults first off? get that checked not all of them put on the eml.
An oil change is definately worth considering, at the very least drain some oil and see what color it is, clear red is good dark brown/black and smells weird is bad.
They have been known to overheat when towing but they have a high temp warning for that, the light should illuminate on start up as a bulb test.
Yes the wiring looms can be an issue. i had the same with mine the main supply wire for the solenoids was broken, it was not rubbing it seems to be a wire issue. So worth checking. the ECU is up by the brake pedal so you can actually check wiring continuity down the main supply and back via each solenoid.

You can get the wiring diagrams here http://faq.out-club.ru/download/l200_200...11/index_M1.htm

Much appreciated Mike - many thanks

Can I ask if your issue was happening all the time with the l200, or just now and again?I haven't checked for faults - need to look into all your advice - thanks again 👍

No the wire that broke that was main power supply to the solenoids so I had no indication, I think it messed up the operation and the clutches slipped a lot but I never noticed. eventually the wire broke, the axle momentarily locked and the box defaulted to third gear.

Cheers Mike - good to know 🙂 👍

I have a workshop manual heading my way today hopefully, so will make a start on looking into it then.

What fault code reader do you guys recommend? A quick search on eBay gives a couple for about £30 but a better looking one for near £100

What would you suggest?
