Hi starter not engaging the ring gear has rubbed on the face of the starter motor and the plate between engine and gearbox . Ring gear doesn't appear to be dislodged there is a small amount of lateral movement on the crankshaft I suspect thrusts are worn is this a common fault ? could it cause the starter to not engage ? thanks for any help

yes stop start on m27 last week for 3hours was fine . the next day it would only turn over for a second I can't see worn ring gear rubbing the starter face it looks okay but you can never really tell towed it off and drove it 250 miles home with no other issues

Do you get a grating sound when it happens then? It's more likely to be a knackered starter solenoid I would have thought.
