Brake problems

#1 by crosswaters , Sat Oct 05, 2013 7:59 pm

My L200 has been laid up for a year and forgotten about by my son-in-law who owned the truck from new and because of a company car he now drives he's let me have the truck to fix up.
I have spent quite a lot of time working on the repairs and last week it went for a M.O.T and passed with flying colours but on driving it back home Its brakes failed, soft peddle and hardly any stopping power at all.
I limped it home and looked over the brake system but couldn't find anything amiss, fluid level ok so no leaks on the system so thought the simple thing to do would be bleed the brakes as air could be the problem.
I found no air in the system and a good flow of fluid from both the front pistons but hardly any flow from the rear bleed nipple when bleeding off fluid.
Also when pumping the brake peddle quickly the front brakes work but no braking on the rear wheels at all.
For the truck to pass a M.O.T then within 2 miles fail with no brakes there must be something sticking somewhere.
Any help I would be thankful.

this may have something to do with your load sensing valve ? clevererer people will be on at some point to explain how it works, what it does, where it is and how to possibly fix/replace it .......... hopefully

Cheers Krutly, yeah I think you right because for it to happen so quickly it must be something like that, I hope its a easy fix/repair as I'm itching to get driving my new truck and I've just taxed it ready for the road.

Load sensor is a very likely cause as it is possible for it to stick closed if it is partially siezed, shouldn't have caused spongy brakes though.. the LSV sits under ther ear axle and changes the amount of braking in relation to the load on the rear of the vehicle. As the load increases the LSV opens and allows more fluid to the rear brakes, and a s such improves the braking to the rear.
Full braking on the rear with no load would cause skidding of the rear wheels ( and the undies) at very low speeds..

Do k-74s have vacuum/servo assist brakes?

Don't know but assume that's the servo below and behind the reservoir?

Over the rear axle, set off to the passenger side, with an arm connected to the diff cover.

Can see the bracket bolted on top of the diff but there's nothing connected to this bracket.
Under the chassis slightly forward of the rear diff there is a unit with electrical connections and brake pipes to it but it is not connected directly to the bracket above the diff.
should there be something attached to this unit and is this the load censor ??

Also what I didn't say the dashboard brake light is on all the time with the handbrake on or off.

Need a pic mate so we can see what you've got please...
Handbrake light could also be fluid level, but check the little switch under the handbrake is switching off properly..

If you disconnect the wire from the switch it'll not work, it 'sees' a negative through the switch ..and I'm sure there are no pad pick-ups on the classics..so it won't be a wear indicator on a caliper..

The thing above the axle is the diff lock compressor mate

In pic 3 the bracket that the pipe runs up the front of should have the LSV actuator arm connected to it... does yours have ABS..?

Oh that's what it is so nothing to do with load sensor then.
Where should I find the load sensor as I take it should be attached to the under chassis then linked to the rear axle via this empty bracket on the diff.
Sorry for all the questions.

no the thing in the pics is for the locking diff, on the rear axle there is a 'T' piece with brake ipes running out to each rear wheel, from that there should be a flexi pipe up to the chassis... where it goes to the chassis should be the LSV...... I need to confirm with someone that ABS truck have an LSV still, but I am fairly certain that they should have. @Alan G

didn't read your last post as I was typing my message, yes has abs.
I think it may be best if I got hold of a workshop manual and have a read up as its a bit unfair of me asking what's wrong when I have little knowledge of the workings of this truck so thanks for you kind help and I will do a bit shopping tomorrow.
Thanks again.
