Veg kit pics and a problem for The Veg King to solve please.........

#1 by Yoda , Sun Apr 15, 2012 9:46 pm

As promised here are photos of my veg kit installation I did this weekend.

Under the bonnet

Auxillery tank

However I'm not as clever as I would like as it isn't all working quite right yet. I need some help maybe from The Veg King or anyone else that may know.......

For the sake of all the following descriptions please keep in mind that diesel is currently in BOTH tanks and NO veg is in either tank. I thought this would be a wise proving technique for the first run of the system.

So... essentially I am getting air coming into BOTH veg and diesel (Main and Aux) sides. Needless to say the engine bogs down and won't rev properly. In order to get running I have shorted the Thermo switch in this diagram so that the system is fooled into allowing me to run the diesel from the veg (main) side without going through the start up procedure. the idea being to prove that one side is working first. I got all visible bubbles out of the tubes shown in the photo by holding the tubes down so that the bubbles flowed up and into the engine. I then pumped the filter until it bled from the bleed nipple, close the nipple and then pumped again to be sure. Then revved the engine. It revs up fine ONCE then air gets back in. Same happens when running from the diesel (aux) side. Also I am getting seemingly some diesel seepage accumulating underneath the return solenoid. Although I cannot trace it at present, I have tightened all the jubilee clips and banjo bolts but it still hasn't sorted the problem.

Guess I'll go through everything tomorrow but if anyone has any similar experience that would help....please fire away.........

also note, that plastic pipe, you should have got brass top hats that sit inside the pipes as well, if not as you clamp up the plastic distorts and again you drag air in, personally im not a fan of that semi hard plastic pipe, i use normal fuel pipe and the correct fuel line clips http://www.aapsa.com.au/awshop/images/SL-2-LRG.jpg, even so you still need to replace every jubilee clip with the correct clips, if the company supplied those jubilees as part of the kit i would be ripping them a new arsehole over the phone

ive always asked for fuel pipe clips, i know halfords sell them bud, funny enough the smartveg instructions warn against using jubilee type clips for anything else but water connections

heres an ebay link that may help you mate

Wonderful, I knew you'd know what's up. Will change them all tomorrow. Also is my aux tank filter in an ok proximity or should it be underneath the truck to allow a better siphon action?

i dont think it matters tbh, mines close to the valves in the engine bay as is the `pump`, still an absolute twat to bleed if you run out, ive done that a few times before i wired up the fuel gauge on mine, so for the info on how to if it happens. get a willing helper to handle the key, rlock down the filler cap on the aux tank, clean the end of the vent pipe, insert in mouth and start blowing you may have to shove a cork up your arse :0, get as much pressure on the fuel head and bang the floor to get your helper to crank her up

SHE RUNS!!! Revs up to 5000rpm on both main and aux side with no retarding of the engine at all! Thanks Treeboa It was indeed the crappy Jubillee clips. Haven't dopped any veg into the main tank yet, will do that tomorrow.

me personally would be ringing dieselveg and ripping them a new arsehole for supplying clips that are known to cause problems, may get nowt but they may just give you a bit of a refund, dont forget to tell them you had to get a diesel specialist to sort out why thier kit failed ;)

welcome to the world of veg mate, dont forget the side effects, uncontrollable laughing as you pass the tax station, when shopping you can often be found in the aisle selling oil, sudden erections as the system switches to veg

see if you have a local jjb foods, bookers etc, see if anyones got a trader ticket, if not try to get one, keep your eyes on tesco for oil deals and occasional bogof`s

generally know you can forget mixing, that includes unleaded in your veg, run it neat

Happy days! I got 200 litres sitting outback which I got from Makro. Gonna start looking around and seeing if there's any other booker etc on my regular commuting routes. And yeah I'll be watching the posts on here for oil deals.

By the way on my test drive tonight I noticed it was switching back to aux tank now and again, I guess it didn't feel things were warm enough. Is it too much of a risk to fit an over ride switch to prevent that? Fool it into thinking things are ok? Or would I be messing with paramters that are set for the safety of my engine?

never seen that happen, unless i have forgotton to flush, in which case it goes into purge mode, the initial fire up from install should purge, in this you see it switching between diesel and veg and back again, then from that it will go into warm up mode before switching over and staying on veg, ive had mine down at minus 12 without it switching back as it senses the oil temp at the heat exchanger which unless your in a frozen pond will be hot, you have to go trough that initial purge of the system

Right I see, so it was probably just purging. And it was only a short 10min journey tonight. Tomorrow I'll have it on the motorway. Also, just found a Bookers 1 mile down the road tucked away in a corner of an industrial estate. Had no idea it was there! Result!!

all good mate, the instructions should mention if theres a purge cycle built in as well as the flush

the reasoning behind it is so it clears any air from both lines on your very first start up,on mine there is a combination of switch presses that put it in purge as well for if/when you manage to run out of fuel

the only other thing i do see, which could be what you are seeing is a light in my switch flashes while its warming if i have it still on diesel, once warmed and still not switched over theres also a series of bleeps, i thik thats a hold over from the basic smart veg that does not have the screen display

last time i had to purge it must have been close on ten miles, then it clicked over to heat but within seconds went from that onto veg

sometimes bookers has a limit on how many drums you can take, just send the mrs in the following day as well, just go for the best deal price wise, usually soya ( ktc) is the cheapest, over time you should find sunflower gives the best power and mpg, trouble is the extra cost for it does not make it worth while, but if you find rape or sunflower at the right price slam it in

you need an account, some the veg lads have created letterheads to ` prove ` they are traders, obviously steer clear of claiming your vat registered unless you actually are, and you may need to be a bit creative in describing your business/trade

check out asian supermarkets as well

Ok so...........turns out, not having a wiring diagram, I wired up the relay trigger to a relay in the vehicle that switches off at 35mph. Goodness knows why or what it does but as soon as I hit 35 it switches to diesel and then below 35 it switches to veg. I'll be fixing this tomorrow. Now where's my ears????

hell i never found that one, mines off the back of the ign switch for switched power and piggybacked of the radio permanent live lead for the memory on the console

you know that relay could be handy for when the mrs wants to drive it, have it on a switch going to the fuel cutoff
