Broken down!! Advice needed

#1 by jimthediver , Wed Jan 04, 2017 8:30 pm

Evening all!
So, Mrs Diver calls earlier to inform that the truck has died end route back from her stables.
Describes:
Engine struggles, rev counter begins flucating wildly (foot off accelerator), EML comes on then all warning lights on fash lights follow before engine dies completely.
When I get there, check and test the following:
Diagnostics - 49 Over boost
Belts - all present and correct
Oil level - between dipstick marks, but note oil dripping from somewhere underneath (to dark to investigate fully)
Timing belt - intact with reasonable deflection
Fuel tank - 3/4 full (with diesel, I filled it last!)
HG - no bubbles or discolouration in coolant or visible inside rocker cover.
Battery has good charge and turns over well.
No other obvious defects visible

I turned the engine over, turns over fine and catches, but then dies in seconds.

Recent service history: all filters and oil about 3k ago (done by me), HG and new Head about 5k ago (pro mech)

Guys - I need to get this back on road asap. What should I look to test next and how? Thanks in advance!!

Any smoke out the back when you do start it?

No more than the slight short white puff when cold started.

This is a stab in the dark from me , do you have a split fuel line that is letting air in ? Stack pipes and metal fuel lines are prone to corroding and rubber one perish and split . The fluctuating Rev counter could be electrical if the engine was running ok and not hunting , could be a bad earth or speed sensor on the pump . Beyond that I'm pretty stumped

Had another thought , when mine played up ages ago ( turning over catching but not starting ) I gave it a small sniff of easy start ( not the best stuff to use ) and got it running like that then dug into it to find the cause

Have you removed the EGR or blanked it

Does the primer pump get hard when pumped?
If not it may be a sign air is entering the fuel line

You can always try running it off a can of fuel direct onto the filter head.
This will eliminate stack pipes split

@ronniecabers - didn't try with loads of accelerator tbh, bit nervy! Delphi diagnostic connected to my laptop.
@AD and @Rob1307 - I did wonder about fuel not getting through. Was a new Milners filter that went on 3k ago, would you expect it to fail so soon? Hadn't considered lines, will trace them back in daylight. Do these have a fuel lifter pump or anything like that?

Yes No

A stuck valve gives the wrong air / fuel mixture and can cause it to cut out

Check if you can to see that the crank pulley is running true when trying to start, may need someone else turning key whilst you look at pulley.

One of my many fuel problems was a split o ring on the fitting at the bottom of the fuel filter

You can eliminate the fuel lines by running the fuel pump from a clean filtered can of diesel if necessary

My two penny worth, was the engine up to temp? Had it been run for long? The symptoms sound exactly like a problem I randomly once had, I had been driving for about an hour between 60-70mph, when the truck kind of went into limp mode, Rev counter fluctuating, EML light was on, complete loss of power, cut out a couple of times, but started on the key again. I limped the truck home, parked it up out the front of the house & disconnected the battery, left it for about 3hrs, reconnected the battery, fired her up & away she went, fault never seen again???

you'd see black smoke out of it I would have thought if it were the valve .... My EGR valve did stick and the smoke was quite obvious. As you say a stuck valve will cause incredibily poor running ... to the point mine wouldn't run ... and it went from start of the trouble to complete stop in about 20 minutes, with driving being ver laboured ( as if handbrake was on )

@Major Malfunction - egr blanked and cooler removed (sorry, missed first post!)
@spud thanks I'll have a look at that tomorrow

Consneus appears to be to look at the fuel system. If start by tryin to bleed the filter again and then run from a clean jerry can of diesel.
Thabkyou all for your suggestions so far!

She says not, but she routinely fails to see stuff (including barns while reversing, hedges whilst driving generally and pheasants generally!)

Looking at the age of the truck air in the fuel most likely from the stack pipes.

I did that the other week in my transit and it does sound the same symptoms but mine failed in 1/4 of a mile and would not start again.
