Sounds good Bootsie. Does it def read EGT's? The scanners I briefly looked at will read IAT but not EGT. Getting the two confused would be catastrophic.

It will give you the readings, the EGR temp for recirculation of gases will give you that reading as it is all recorded on the rcu, Torque is quite a powerful programme for its size and all the apps are well worth hsaving, will give waveform or graph information on any sensor etc, I bought a slightly more expensive scanner which connects to pc or laptop, basically anything that is supplying information to the ecu for the ecu to adjust functions can be read. The egr is operated on readings from 7 defferent sensors, worth having a look at the 'Technocal information manual' in specificationds to see some of the improvements they have made to the 4D56, simple little things like extra fan blades up to the really technical stuff which is probably referring to chsanges in head to crossflow aand piston construction etc worth a read cos some of the simple things like front mounted inercooler and positioning, with directed vent at bottom of rad for airflow to rad to avoid blockage by entercooler etc, simple things to add to help the classics when modding.

Thanks for that Bootsie. If there's anything I can adopt I will. Short of the common rail!

From that point of view I'm in the right place with my engine. Veg converted and ready for some proper mods armed with the know how. That's worked out well since I had no idea about any of this when I started.

A thought........ could you fit 3rd generation head and pistons to a 2nd gen block? But without the common rail?

A bit late for me to seriously consider it now after just putting in a new head. But when I'm done with what I want to do I may take a better look at the idea.

very much so, twin cams and 16 valve, water channels have been opened out too, piston design changed, different injectors , crossflow, exhaust one side of engine inlet on the other side etc

There's always a way to make something work. But it could be a bit of a crazy idea I just had.

This site was sent to me by Basil as he thought I would find it of interest. He was spot on! If you have found this thread interesting so far I strongly suggest you read this link. For me it definitively explains why there seems to be common denominator between people fitting chips and blowing heads. I t also explains why some people have blown heads without any apparent warning. It also in better language explains the effect of EGT's on a diesel engine. And shows beyond doubt why remapping or chipping is safe if done correctly. On that not its a very clever intuitive add on chip that these guys have built. For starters it gives 150BHP with an EGT failsafe!!!!!

Short answer, if you want to avoid over heating fit an EGT gauge and learn how to read it and drive accordingly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: there is a warning about where an EGT is fitted. Namely that if fitted before the turbo a cheap EGT make break off and damage the turbo and in turn the engine. I am looking into this before deciding whether to fit my EGT after the turbo or to buy a more expensive EGT gauge. Basil, take note!!!!!!!

pointless having a probe per cylinder unless you can adjust fuel/ air per cylinder on the trot, in essence four turbos, four injector pumps and all inlet and exhaust branches exactly the same length, every thing controlled by a computer - formula one

So the probe just plugs into those two wires then?

theres four wires coming out the back of the gauge, two black, one red , one green - red to ign, green to red sensor wire, black to black sensor wire, and the other black goes to negative on the battery

Cool.So as far as I am concerned then we can buy £40 probes from one of 3 manufacturers that are more reputable and won't (shouldn't) risk breaking off pre turbo. Opinions on quality of the gauge?

Raj, pre turbo is far more accurate.

heres a fun ten minutes - type in "who makes the best auto gauges" to google - ok could be one of many - these wouldn`t pass muster with siemens I daresay , but they`ll be fine - when you go for the sensor , let me have a link so I can get one Luke? ta mate

Was hoping to get this one. I was just waiting until my gauge turned up so I could check it fits. This one is a K - type thermo couple, which is what we want. The one you have appears to be a direct copy of a k-type thermo couple. So by all rights it should be a straight replacement. And we will still be under the £135 alternative.
