Geoff, thats good mate as we have serious lagging on the pipe from the manifold down to retain heat, I would estimate that you are running around 50 deg less on low revs and around 100 deg less at 50MPH

Luke, I know for a fact that an engine will lose 100 deg for every 1 metre of pipe (unlagged), I would estimate that once the turbo has warmed up there would be very little loss of heat through it ( I would guess around 50 deg max ).

that seems a lot to dissipate through the turbo - this process is very interesting, in as much as when accelarating in 5th the temperature was about 400`c, and dropped to 300`c when dropping to 4th fascinating how the physics works

Basil, you will see a noticeable difference when towing or going up hill, load the engine ( not revs) and watch 'em climb mate. The harder the engine works, the hotter the EGT's.

one thing I`ve already noticed is there`s less attention on the road, and more of my time spent looking at everything happening inside!

That is a scary thing too......... you will modify your driving habits to suit the temps and things going on...
That is what I was saying Geoff about not doing the maths yet..

Just referred to the best explanation of EGT's and their effect that I have found. See here: http://www.chipit.com.au/support/why-are-egts-important-1/

The following is a snippet from their page:

"Whether the pyrometer thermocouple is mounted before or after the turbine is usually a matter of finding a suitable mounting location or a convenience one. It should be noted that when the EGT is measured after the turbine, the turbine outlet temperature at full throttle or under a heavy load typically would be circa 100? C. lower than the EGT measured in the exhaust manifold."

- noticeably they are suggesting the turbo loss is as high as 100degreees. Not stating. This indicates you probably right Lez.

However, when my EGT gauge goes in it IS going pre turbo. So we'll soon know both exactly how much turbo heat loss there is and hence can also make a direct comparison of engine temps between the two trucks. For now just knowing if the HHO is putting them up or down will be plenty of info.

Anyone gauged a non FBW? I'm looking at a new exhaust so was considering fitting one. Is this good for anyone or are your results as good for everyone?

I've got an EGT gauge ready to go on my truck Dan. It's a cable throttle. I need it to see what the water injection does to temps. Ultimate plan is to fit hydro as well. Can't see how egt's would be diffwerent from a fbw to a cable throttle if neither engine has been messed with. We'll soon know as mine will compare to Basils.

if anything i think the fbw should be slightly lower due to the ecu controling the boost

Wenn Sie hier auf Links zu eBay klicken und einen Kauf tätigen, kann dies dazu führen, dass diese Website eine Provision erhält.

Thanks to Mike who just told me that piston number 4 is the hottest so therefore the EGR exhaust blank is the obvious place to mount the EGT probe. So no taking the manifold and turbo off

Anyone got an EGR blanking kit knocking around? If not I'll scoot on over to ebay.

just ordered one masell yods - get shot of the cybermans head - It says in the blurb on ebay that cheap kits have a single plate made of thin alloy - oops thats what i got the first time - it says these sometimes burn through with no outward clue so I`m doing what I shoul have the first time

Mounting it in the EGR blank...what a bloody good idea! I never thought of that when fitting mine!!! I've fitted mine in the 90 degree exit of the turbo, basically because it was the easiest part to get to without stripping the truck, or so I thought!!! I did have to trim the turbo shield. As it is after the turbo, I just add on 100deg to whatever the reading is. The gauge is mounted in one of the 3 holes in a pod I have fitted on the A-pillar.

It works well thru the blanking plate. mines been there for a while now easy fitting too.

Most of the time it sits ay zero (200) lifts to about 550 on hills, sustained flat speed (60) about 350 - 400.
Not done any towing with it yet.
I have not done any tech check but may just do that.

Cruising around town it sits off of the bottom of the scale. Cruising at 70-80mph its at 200-300 degrees, and when accelerating hard, or on a big long high speed climb its up at 500-550ish degrees. These are actual readings, not my +100 degrees ones.
