So the key is whether or not the 4x4 is actually engaging or not... if 4x4 is engaging its just a light issue ... if not its a more serious issue

indeed that is why one should always check the actuator moves when u select 4 h or L with the lever

Surely a quick way is get on slippery mud/grass , stick in it 4x4 and see if you spin ( always having another vehicle to hand in case you get stuck lol)

And what are the pictures of ( I am clueless! )

that rod sticking up is the end of the actuator it engauges that ring arond the axle to give 4wd

You could lock the actuator into 4WD and use free wheeling hubs - would work fine, but better to get the proper system running imo

that would work just use the lever to engauge the transfer box then

You can see I'm not expert but from what I have gleaned from you guys during this process it seems that the 4WD is manually engaged by moving the lever. The vacuum system engages and disengages the freewheel to the front prop it does not engage the 4WD system.
Happy to be put right if that is incorrect.

Anyway I have checked the supply to the solenoid and they both show 0V in 4H and 12V in 2H.

Your 4H and 4L lever when operated completes two tasks,
1, it engages the transfer box, which will turn the front prop shaft, this spinning on its own does nothing until the other part of the system works.
2, a switch, of which there are two, 4H switch and 4L switch which both do the same it just two switches one for each movement that activates the solenoid that allows vacuum to move the actuator..

Freewheeling hubs are a manual method of stopping the drive shafts from rotating whether in 4x4 or not, they are to prevent undue wear and tear. They are manually rotated on the hub to engage or disengage the drive shafts and will not stop the problem with the actuator.
If you have vacuum at the actuator then the problem lies with the actuator. No vacuum then the problem is with the solenoids or 4 wheel drive ECU or switches, although the switches can be ruled out as it is rare for both switches to not work and your problem is when not in 4 wheel drive when these switches become redundant.

actually the 4 h and 4 L are selected by the stick the solenoids just control the acuator regardless of 4 h or 4 L the actuator will be in the same posistion

When the stick is moved it activates the switch which in turn activates the solenoids to operate the actuator, the manual movement also engage the transfer box.

irelivant of 4 H or L the acuator is in the same place 4h and 4L are different cogs in the transfer box

that is why u can use 2L with freehwheeling hubs

You are correct but it's the switches on the gearbox that open a circuit that activates the ECU in turn the solenoids.

You got it pretty good there the first time mate! when you're in 4WD (hi or low) the drive obviously goes to all 4 wheels! when you switch to 2WD, the transmission to the front wheels is broken in two places, physically via the lever in the transfer box, and via the vacuum system that disengages the front axles from being driven by the front diff. The first stops the engine wasting energy spinning the front prop and diff directly from the gearbox and the second does the same by stopping the diff/prop shaft being spun up indirectly by the front wheels (also saves wear and lots of vibration). Lee - you ever realised you could do away with the free wheeling hubs and just put an override switch in for the front actuator?

Just give the actuator loads of lube and give it a good workout by engaging and dis engaging then visually check its movement
