You can see I'm not expert but from what I have gleaned from you guys during this process it seems that the 4WD is manually engaged by moving the lever. The vacuum system engages and disengages the freewheel to the front prop it does not engage the 4WD system.
Happy to be put right if that is incorrect.

Anyway I have checked the supply to the solenoid and they both show 0V in 4H and 12V in 2H.

You got it pretty good there the first time mate! when you're in 4WD (hi or low) the drive obviously goes to all 4 wheels! when you switch to 2WD, the transmission to the front wheels is broken in two places, physically via the lever in the transfer box, and via the vacuum system that disengages the front axles from being driven by the front diff. The first stops the engine wasting energy spinning the front prop and diff directly from the gearbox and the second does the same by stopping the diff/prop shaft being spun up indirectly by the front wheels (also saves wear and lots of vibration). Lee - you ever realised you could do away with the free wheeling hubs and just put an override switch in for the front actuator?

yeh but the shafts and cvs would still spin and wear well one of them for sure and with the lokka that aint good in 2wd

I'm surprised that the Japs went for this 'complicated" system when you would think that a simple Series Land Rover solution would have done the job. Then again the age of electronics has overtaken me and left me in a techno haze.

What's clear is that it's some kind of voodoo thing that haunts these trucks.

My solenoid work, I have good vacuum, the actuator moves freely so I'm left with a dodgy switch which I can't get off or a dodgy ECU.

Wish I still had my 1997 single cab it was much less trouble

Two switches top n/s of gearbox and the ECU off eBay cheap as chips second hand, fits in the n/s footwell behind the kick board.

Cleaned the solenoids with switch cleaner checked the voltages, lovely. Put it back together and no flashing light. Ran smashing no problems and was just thinking of congratulating myself and thanking everyone. pulled up at home, switched off to open the gate and started up to drive through the ferking light is flashing again.
If this isn't the most annoying piece of crap that was ever invented mutter mutter mutter where's the sledgehammer

Milners sell the solenoids not mega bucks, it's worth renewing, I changed mine about 3 months ago when I had a blip.

They're more genuine than mine cos I lashed mine up out of bits stolen from a Ford Maverick! Some suppliers will do this though if they don't have their own in stock, they will source them from somewhere else so they don't let down their customers
