Brakes or 4WD?

#1 by bobberjob , Sat Jul 01, 2017 2:15 pm

Hi guys

Sometimes it feels as though either the brakes are dragging on or the 4WD is engaging by itself.

This is really weird because it comes and goes and you only notice it when pulling off or coming to a halt.

I know that there is a brake issue because the truck is losing fluid so maybe master cylinder or servo problem but also think there is a 4WD issue

Any suggestions welcome

2001 double cab

Thanks

4x4 is either on or off and needs manually selecting , my money is seized front brake calipers.

Do you get a strange winding down noise when you slow down, like whoa, woah, woah... Click?

Last night coming down a gradient on over run I thought a giant aircraft was coming over then I realised it was me!
A loud whining which stopped when I did. 4wd light came on? Selected 4H then 2H and light went out. Noise disappeared.
If 4WD needs manually selecting then what is happening with the drive train?
Brake problem was leaking rear cylinders but 4WD is obviously still a problem

That's a problem with the free wheeling axle system. What is happening is that the actuator arm on the front axle is moving to the 4WD position so that the front diff and prop-shaft are now being driven by the front wheels - you are not actually in 4WD though because the transfer box is not driving the front prop (as the transfer box lever is in 2WD position).

When no vacuum is applied to the actuator arm, it tends to move to the 4WD position - the problem is likely to be blocked piping between the 2WD solenoid and the actuator arm or the 2WD solenoid itself.

Could also just be stuck actuator , had that on mine , just sprayed it will wd40 a few times over the course of a week and problem went away. Actuator for reference : look under the truck , by drivers door towards the gearbox, look forward you will see a ' bellows ' carefully prise this back and liberally lube the pin, refit ... will probably need doing a couple of times... its either that or a vacuum issue as Heathen says

if the actuator arm isn't stuck, you could bypass the solenoids by connecting the actuator nipple (there are two and can't remember which one it is you need, but you'll be able to tell pretty easy) straight to the vacuum source, but you'll need some spare vacuum hose to make it reach.

If it's just one of the metal pipes blocked up (likely) - if you have a spare bit of brake pipe, just put it in place of the metal pipe as a temporary fix

Might replace the tubing with silicone completely but can't believe the price of the accumulator £40 on eBay that's more than a Porsche one.

The price of Mitsi parts is extortionate, thats why I've stuck with Land Rover.

Ok quick update
I did a vacuum test on the pipe work to the freewheel actuator and got 30 somethings in 4H on the blue and 0 in 2H and 30 in 2H on the yellow with 0 in 4H.
Vacuum seems to hold fine
Actuator moves freely with pipes connected and in and out ok when selecting 4WD/2WD
I tried to get the electrical connection off the indicator switch to the free wheel unit but couldn't work out how as it seems to be a fixed and couldn't find any connector even on the chassis.
Still get the noise when driving and the light is OFF but changing into 4WD and back to 2WD usually cures it. No noise when the light is flashing so sounds like something electrical.

Any ideas?

Ta

Maybe that the actuator isn't moving all the way to the 2WD position? - try putting into 2wd with engine running and see if you can move it further manually. Have you tested the voltages going to the actuators?

Would I be right in thinking that if I fit free wheeling hubs I can junk all this vacuum electro nonsense?
I know I'd have to manually get out and engage 4WD on the hubs.
I'll keep trying but I hate electronics

I Think you will find that the actual 4x4 system is still engaged ' manually ' eg by the lever in the cab. All the vacuum system is doing is engaging the actuator to switch that light on on the dashboard ... or thats what I was told .......

When mine was ' whirring , then clicking ' ... Nickburt said not too worry too much about it as the system was mechanically operated.. thats all I'm saying
