I can't remember off the top of my head, however the standard ones were big enough to hold mine whilst doing the mock up, albeit they wouldn't have been strong enough to cope with the winch.
I'm going to be out working on mine today, with Tcut so ill run one of the bolts out and have a look

Aye looks reasonably clean. Winch looks well used but not too worried about that. Just hope there's no other brackets or plates missing

RE: Robl200's Build thread

#107 by robl200 , Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:51 am

Was bored last night so thought I'd temporarily fit the bumper to give me an idea of how it goes on and how to make lift brackets for it. I've come to the conclusion that the captive nuts (cage nuts) that come supplied are as useful as a chocolate fireguard in a house hold of people allergic to chocolate! I think I will weld my own captive nuts to the brackets to improve things. I remove all of the winch wiring as I want to relocate it into the engine bay. I am thinking that if I put the isolator under the bonnet it will encourage me to winch with the bonnet up. This means that should a strap go the shackle or whatever will hit the bonnet rather than coming through the screen!

Anyway here's a pic.....

Just a thought, but are you staying black or changing to Silver to match the bottom half of your truck...?

I would have always said black until I saw Greigs colour coded silver one, I think that looks great.

Looks cracking Rob, but the garage looks like it needs sorting out!

Let me know how you get on extending the brackets as I've got this to do when I get home.

Just make sure the welding is spot on Rob, especially when it comes to the brackets, a hobby mig is highly unlikely to give you the penetration required to cope with the strain of the winch.
You can get away with it being a bit snottery on light gauge stuff but for safety you'll certainly need a better standard on the brackets.

Aye, the idea I have would be to knock out the 4 captive nuts on the brackets. Then use some 40x40 box and bolt it into place using 12.9 rated bolts. Once that's done I'll run welds around the tops and bottoms of where the box meets the brackets. Belts and braces approach and all that!

Yeah, I welded mine around the edges of the brackets, but I also bolted through the side of the brackets and I added a lug so that there were was one through the side for additional support to try and stop it flexing down under load

Bumper fitting finalised

Made brackets, used 40x40 box with a section of 30x30 box welded inside giving a wall thickness of 7mm. I knocked out the 4 captive nuts from the back of the brackets on the truck. I then drilled holes in the brackets. 4 in the front that would raise the bumper up the 2 inches. If I was doing it again I would hole saw holes in the opposite face of the box to make it easier to tighten the bolts.

Then fitted the bumper, adjusted it a bit and then stuck my sticky plate on the bonnet. Greig's engine lift trick came in handy as well

Cheers folks. Just need to wire up the winch. Tried wiring it to the battery and couldn't get it to spool but I was in a rush and had no instructions so probably cocked it up lol!

Right, a few things in the pipeline again...

Have bought wheel spacers. Got Animal's 30mm bulldog ones. should have them on this weekend.
Ordered one of the bash plates from here. Will need to see if it will fit my truck as it is an early 01 and these were made to fit an 03. I know the asfir set comes in two variants but will offer it up and see how it looks.
after much pondering and searching I have ordered these.... http://www.allnewtyres.co.uk/tyre-detail...CFZShtAodfwwAiA
They are in the 285/75/16 I was looking for and a good price! Cheapest I'd found 265/75/16s for were the coopers through the ebay shop the greigboy recommended at around £110 each with postage so these worked out about £10 a tyre dearer. Ordered 5 so will have a matching spare for the first time in a looooooooong while! I can also vouch for the quality of these tyres as I have had a set for the last few years that have covered many miles across mixed terrain day in day out. They are also a triple ply sidewall so pretty tough! D

Your truck looks the mutt's Rob. I really think adding the squarer front makes all the difference. Now a set of black arches from CCCreations to finish it all off?
