RE: Robl200's Build thread

Well, a day of mixed fortunes today....

Went to get tyres fitted early doors. Went on no probs got the 4 on the truck and the spare seen to.

Old vs new

Had a little scrubbage on the front mud flaps on the way home so took them off and left them with the other bits of L200 in the garage

I then went to unload the old tyres from the tub and could hear a hissing sound coming from the spare..... I thought it would be coming from one of the beads of the tyre not being properly sealed but after a closer inspection it is coming from the join in the wheel..... I know I could send the wheel back but I'd have to take it back to the tyre place, have the tyre removed, send it away, wait for the new one etc etc... Instead I'll take around 2 seconds to put a tiny weld where the leak is and job is done

Went on to look at the winch as I still haven't had it running yet. I connected everything up as it was in the photos I took when the bumper arrived..... No movement from the winch

I decided to strip things down and have a look. the motor end comes off the winch pretty easy and once apart is pretty straight forward. I removed the ring with all the brushes on it, all intact. Removed the spindle and rotating coil assembly, again all looks good. Unbolted the stator coils from the motor casing, everything appears normal.

I put everything back in the casing and try to connect the motor straight to the battery.... Positive from batt to connecter at brushes, Negative from batt to earth on motor casing. Positive from batt to one of the pins attached to stator coil, negative from batt to earth on motor casing.....

No movement, a little smoke at battery end of things and a bad smell......

Think it may be dead. Was sold as working but I'm now not so sure. I've not worked with winches before but think my wiring was correct. If anyone with a winch can advise that would be brill!

Can you draw what you connected to where? Sounds to me like the motor is goosed though. on the plus side, the truck looks great!

Hmmmm... Well, I thought I understood electrics and motors but stators are new to me.

Since you posted this, Rob, (19 minutes ago) I've been googling for stator circuit diagrams and I'm not coming up with much of any use. I found some discussion that suggested that you need a specific kind of relay but I can't deduce what that "magic" relay would do.
Did your kit come with a relay of any kind?

I'll keep googling!

Looking at this; http://www.carid.com/images/smittybilt/p...nstructions.pdf

It seems that the stator and brushes should connect to a control box, rather than directly to +12v. My limited (so far) understanding suggests that the stator might be on an alternate phase to the brushes? That would explain the requirement for a control box (and the smoke!, as you'd be stalling the motor).

@LezT would be far more useful than me on this, but I suspect you're on a loser without that control box. Do you have such a thing?

I have the control box too. I connected it up with the box first but got nothing. I was pretty much trying to 'hot wire' the motor to see if it ran at all

Think that's where yer smoke will be coming from. I suspect the stator should be on an opposing phase from the brushes.

I tried it this way first. If they are in opposite phase then surely it would have worked when i swapped the wire from red to yellow?

Sorry chaps, long week, had an early one..and for my sins am wide awake now... Rob, did you have the winch motor casing earthed to the battery, I don't mean via the negative terminal..... Often winch motors have an earth cable that needs to be connected from it's casing, apart from the neg.
The control box is just a pair of heavy uty solenoids that give a reversed polarity, to run the motor backwards.. Most winch motors have a pos, neg and a separate battery neg fron the casing, three cables in all...

@LezT Didn't seem to come with any other earth cable. As far as I can tell it went neg of batt to earth on winch casing. Control box had 3 wires going to the winch. One to the connection with the brushes and another two to the connections on the stator coils. Control box then had a wire that went to the isolator then isolator to positive on batt. The control box also had a small wire going to the earth on the winch casing.

@robert3040 My old tyres were very similar and had them on for a good number of miles with no bother. Just need to drive sensibly in the wet and they were ok. New ones were fine in the crap weather today too.

I was doing some Warn's recently for a Helium Tethered Balloon handling system ( it had 3 on) they all were suspect of being shyte, then we read the wiring diagram and it said about the seperate ground..
Thinking out loud, what happens when you try and reverse the winch direction.....dead short of pos to ground ?

Just checked mine. It also has a case to battery lead, doesn't have a stud with a nut like the rest, it is just a bolt in the case

Bumper fitting was ok. Bolt the brackets to the truck first then offer the bumper up. I found the nuts that came with it pants so welded nuts on where they would have been. to sort it for the lift I used some 40x40x4 and some 30x30x3 box to make brackets to fit inside the ones on the end of the chassis. I knocked the old captive nut out the brackets so the box section could slide in. If I were remaking the brackets, I would definitely hole saw holes in the rear face of the bracket to make it easier to get nuts inside as it was a right pain!

Well, run up to mot time this year..... Fog light bracket rusted through so it is kind of cable tied on for now and handbrake cable snapped today... Along with suspension and other assorted clunks and bangs think this will cost a little......

Handbrake cables, front wheel bearings, steering idler and filter kit came from KS today. They forgot to send the oil I ordered but that should be here tomorrow

All wishbone bushes and ARB bushes from milners along with upright bearings, thrust washers and seals

Also got genuine wheel bearing seals from mitsi along with driveshaft float adjustment shims with a cheeky bit of staff discount which is always nice

Hopefully going to get a pair of used driveshafts today and my new front shocks should arrive too!

Readjusted my alternator belts again last night as they were screaming like hell! Bottom pulley is ok, when I went to tighten up the main alternator bolt it kept spinning which is unusual for a captive bolt.... turns out part of the alternator casing has sheared off....

I was a bit frustrated with the truck at this point to diverted my attention to something else....

Started throwing together a dirtjump bike Fitted the headset forks and bars/stem. Got most of the bits in the garage just need a rear wheel and some cranks really. Trek bruiser frame (with turner stickers for some reason) and marazocchi 55R forks

Then I thought I should be more productive and had another look at the winch. I nabbed some scrap batteries from my old work so I could hook it up without being near the car. Connected it all up with the control box but leaving out the isolator and managed to get it turning! It seemed to really struggle though so I'm hoping that is down to the fried nature of the batteries. I'll try test the isolator today at some point.

To do list.....
Engine service (filters + oil)
Rebush ARB with poly bushes
Rebush Upper wishbones with poly bushes
Rebush lower wishbones with poly bushes
Fit new steering idler
Fit new front upright bearings + seals + thrust washers
Fit new front wheel bearings + seals
Fit second hand driveshafts
FIt handbrake cables
Make/fit new foglight bracket
Paint/fit new skid plates
Fit winch + Alloy fairlead + rope

Then have a beer or 5!!
