RE: Yoda's build project.

Yes this was the first Plastdip he has done. He's a friend of mine that is building his own business doing car mods as he is phasing out is day job.

It took a day to deconstruct, treat body work and rust, weld the one wing, clean and wash the truck. A day to spray and a few hours the next day to peel and reassemble. The cleaning has to be as good as rolling out the factory. Then you degrease the whole body down. I helped with all but the spraying and welding.

Cost wise if someone was wanting this done, it would be competitive with the other company offering dipping. The key is prep. If he has to weld like he did on mine then naturally it will cost more. Scratches that fail the finger nail test have to be touched up, wet sanded then buffed before dipping commences. You get the picture. I got this cheap as he's a mate and we do plenty to help each other. I can ask about costs if you wish Skotl?

Longevity, it's still a reletivly new tech. In America they are going around 6 yrs without needing to reapply so far. But it's a really easy repair you can do yourself if it ever did tear through. Like REALLY easy. Dipyourcar.com have loads of videos that answer all these questions.

Would it stick to chrome? I don't see why not. I would check for you first though Colin.

Six years, huh? That's pretty impressive.
I guess the question about cost would be what he thinks it would cost to do a walk-in, rather than for a mate. 2-3 days effort plus that materials is, I'd think, going to get close to a grand. Still way cheaper than a respray. though!

Thanks, Luke.

No we're taking nearer £500. A lot of the time on the truck is spent well, waiting. Not doing much. If t prep is less than mine, ie no rust to treat, and it just needs a damn good clean first then it's less time.

yes it does stick to chrome. It also sticks to freshly turned aluminium and human hands, if left to set

It's funny because it feels like paint when it gets on your hands but if you let it dry it just peels off

Still seems a bargain. And how does it fell on the truck, Luke? In my minds eye it would come off with a scrape of a fingernail but I'm assuming that is far from the case, right?

It will scratch, but it's not that easy to take off. When we peeled the lights etc you really have to dig with your nail to get it start peeling. If it does peel or scratch through off roading etc then it's a really easy repair. Dab some thinners on the tear which re-liquifies it and smooths out the edge, allow to dry, and spray with an aerosol of PlastiDip. If it's only a scratch you don't need thinners, just spray over th scratch. Once dry it matches perfectly with no blending needed.

On the plastdip thread there is a truck going off road which shows how durable it is. Not the toughest thing out there no, but it's removable and doddle to repair.

Nice. And have you had any comments from "the man in the street" on the new look?

I think Rab102030405060 has found a potential supplier in Edinburgh so waiting for a price

Yup! Quite a lot actually! Before now and again people would double take my truck. Now, in just two days the amount of people who stare at it has gone through the roof!

Steve told me to buy another tape. Can't remember what it was called. And to apply it to the arch instead. But yeah, we'll manage :-)

Yesterday a 'pimped' '07 Hilux with four guys in it passed me on the motorway. Every one of them was staring as they went past.

I was like "yeah, you modified your truck the wrong way!"

Few more close up shots that I took myself.

Left the badge black as I think it gives a cool stealthy look, but I can peel it later if I change my mind.
